The Altes Museum in Berlin is located on the Museumsinsel island among the city’s other best museums. It is set in a large Neo Classical building by Schinkel – often regarded as his masterpiece, being raised on a plinth to give it extra significance to the eye. The museum houses items of antiquity, and a great collection at that. Amongst pieces on display are Greek and Roman art, sculptures, vases, statues and many more items dug up and rescued from archaeological sites and private collections around the Mediterranean. The Egyptian Museum has also been housed here, but is due into a new home in 2009.
