The Altenburg in Bamberg is an old feudal fortress to the southwest of the city centre. It was built in 1109 and features a dominant tower in the centre. It has been restored massively since it had declined noticeably. The fortress sits on a hill overlooking Bamberg, and unsurprisingly offers the best views of the skyline and surrounding countryside. The Altenburg is open to the public during daylight, but beware the lengthy climb to reach it.
