Altenburg Castle is a huge structure which towers over the surrounding old town. It was formerly the home of various dukes. The current building dates from the early 1700s and is built in a Baroque style. There is a tower surviving from the previous building, however. It dates to the 10th century. The castle houses the Spielkartenmuseum (Museum of Playing Cards). Here you will see all manner of different playing cards from various time periods – a very original collection! Visitors are also able to see occasional exhibitions at the castle, as well as summer concerts. Also see the castle church, with a special organ.
