The Rathaus (Town Hall) in Alsfeld is one of the best examples of a half timbered building anywhere in Germany. It was built between 1512 and 1516, and is a late Gothic design. It sits on the market square in the centre of the old town (Altstadt), surrounded by many other half timbered buildings. It contains many splendid rooms and halls, despite its small size. The building is still used for the town’s administrative duties today, and is not open to the public.
